Hey-o Reader, This might be controversial, but I believe women are hard-wired to be impactful, generous speakers. Hear me out. When my son Garrett was about 5, he had a doctor’s appointment to get his well-kid shots. That morning, Garrett was asking about the plan...who was taking him, why I couldn’t go, what time he’d be back. He looked at me and said, “Because Dad doesn’t go back into the office with me.” Now, I knew Scott didn’t just send our tiny human into the exam room solo. So I pressed him a little more. Garrett shrugged and said, “I don’t know… You’re just more supportive.” 💓 Cue the swelling of my momma heart. But it also hit me: that supportive instinct is one of the most powerful traits a speaker can have. One of the biggest game-changers for an effective speaker is empathy. The ability to put yourself in your audience’s shoes, truly see them and work to understand what they’re thinking and feeling is a superpower for speakers who want to engage, connect and move your audience. And women tend to come with that empathy chip already installed at the factory. We’re wired to nurture. To see and accept people who see the world differently. To help carry their burdens. To step in and help when we can. Add in our love of a juicy, detailed story and our desire for authentic connection and you’ve got a recipe for a magnetic, memorable speaker who doesn’t just inform but transforms. Have I learned from and been moved by incredible male speakers? Absolutely. Without a doubt. Half a dozen amazing, perspective-changing speakers come to mind right now. But I also believe—deeply—that every woman I know has more to say than she realizes…and more power than she’s been encouraged to use. The gift is already there. What’s often missing is the confidence to speak up, show up, and step into that gift. That’s the part I’m working to change. And this fall, I’m opening up spots in 3 different programs designed to help women do exactly that.
